CURRENT PROJECT

The Aunty Yvonne Kent commemorative portrait

This project is more then a commemoration of Aunty. It is a leadership development program designed to spotlight and foster leadership in our community.

The Aunty Yvonne Kent Commemorative Portrait Leadership Development Program will run from March to December 2023.

Aunty Yvonne Kent was an iconic indigenous elder and leader for the cohesion and collaboration between the local first nation people, the Gomeroi people, and the broader community.

She engaged enthusiastically in the first Tamworth community-based leadership development program in 2016 and became a founding member of Regional Unlimited, being appointed to the board in 2019.

Sadly, Aunty passed during the first wave of COVID. The RU Board made a commitment to host multiple community events to complete a portrait of Aunty and include the community in the process.

Why start with Aunty Yvonne Kent?

  1. Her passing is relatively recent (May 2021) and so is still in living memory
  2. She was a leader for the cohesion and collaboration across the broader community
  3. In addition to contributions to indigenous organisations such as Local Aboriginal Land Council, she made significant contributions to non-indigenous organisations and activities such as; Midnight basketball, Cornerstone Community Kitchen, North and Northwest Community Legal Services, Tamworth Family Support Services and engaged in programs offered by schools
  4. She engaged enthusiastically in the first 10X Tamworth community-based leadership development program in 2015 and became a founding member of Regional Unlimited, being appointed to the board in 2019
  5. In March 2021, Council at the time, unveiled by the Previous Mayor, Councillor Col Murrary, accepted to receive a completed portrait of her and hang it in a suitable place of prestige.

The RU Board made a commitment to host multiple community events to complete the painting during 2021, but with further Covid 19 outbreaks, this was not possible. Now, the next 10X Leadership Development program to be centred around;

  • honour leadership examples, and further spotlighting community-based leadership, and
  • strengthen and expand connections across the community/communities.

Regional Unlimited will:

  • provide leadership development to the working committees,
  • host 3 community painting and speaking events,
  • gift the artwork to the city- Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) to hold and keep safe on behalf of the community, and
  • establish an alumni to continue the work, perhaps with a view to making ‘Honouring Community Founders’ an annual program.
